Senior Policy Advisor, Culture Program
Third Way is seeking a Senior Policy Advisor to play a major role on the Third Way Culture Program team, including researching and writing policy and message documents on culture issues, thinking strategically about the culture issues, and representing the Culture Program at external meetings. This position reports directly to the Director of Culture Program.
Responsibilities include:
- Develop policy and message products
- Conduct in-depth research and distill complex culture issues into succinct and accessible formats, such as policy and message memos, summaries, and external fact sheets and correspondence
- Conduct in-depth research and draft reports on various culture policy topics
- Create PowerPoint presentations, talking points, Q&A documents, polling summaries and other presentation and briefing materials on Culture Program products
- Monitor and analyze current events and developments on Culture Program issues
- Research and analyze legislative debates and political developments on such topics as abortion, immigration, and gay and lesbian issues
- Monitor online databases, media outlets, and reports from government, academia, and advocacy communities to stay abreast of relevant issues
- Create and analyze public opinion/polling content to inform policy and messaging recommendations
- Monitor public opinion studies online
- Work with pollsters to develop new polling and public opinion surveys
- Distill poll results into useable summaries for target audiences
- Use public opinion data to inform content of messaging recommendations
- Represent Third Way at meetings, briefings and presentations
- Work closely with Congress, Governors' offices, advocacy organizations and other progressive leaders on culture program issues
- Other duties as assigned.
Candidate Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree, graduate degree strongly preferred but not required, plus a minimum of three to five years of research and policy analysis experience in domestic policy.
- A broad working knowledge of the politics and policy debates around such topics as abortion, immigration and gay and lesbian issues, as well as the ability to rapidly come up to speed on new issues.
- Ability to synthesize complex information and present in a clear and concise manner.
- Exceptional analytical, research and writing skills.
- Ability to work well and consistently in a team, but also independently.
- Strong public presentation ability, along with strong communication skills.
- Ability to function in a fast paced, demanding environment.
- Ability to think creatively about complex and controversial topics.

National Security Program Director
Third Way is seeking a Director for the National Security Program to supervise and manage all program activities. This position reports directly to the Vice President for Public Affairs.
Responsibilities include:
- Develop and implement policy and message products.
- Present Third Way products and help lead highly interactive, specialized trainings for Congress, governors, staff and other progressive leaders.
- Devise materials on a range of national security issues, including, but not limited to, terrorism, Iraq, the state of US military and future defense and foreign policy challenges.
- Supervise and manage the work of the National Security team and a group of outside advisors and consultants.
- Other duties as assigned.
Candidate Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree, graduate degree preferred but not required, plus a minimum of five years of congressional, federal, campaign or other relevant experience.

Executive Assistant
Third Way is seeking an Executive Assistant to provide administrative assistance in a broad range of activities to the President and the Founders/Vice Presidents. Reporting directly to the President, this position is part of Third Way’s administrative support team.
The position has four major areas of responsibility:
Executive Assistant to the President
- Manage the President's calendar, working with internal and external contacts to prioritize and schedule meetings.
- Manage the President's correspondence and ensure the flow of information and documents.
- Plan and coordinate the President's travel.
- Support the President in planning and executing staff meetings, conference calls and staff events.
- Support the President in managing and fulfilling his role as Third Way’s primary fundraiser.
- Create and maintain appropriate filing and documentation systems and databases.
- Complete administrative forms, assist and prepare the tracking and monitoring of expenses for the President.
Liaison to the Board of Trustees and Consultants of the President
- Liaison to the Board of Trustees, Board Committees and Contractors.
- Prepare, distribute and track Board of Trustee invoices and contributions.
- Prepare and distribute materials for the Board of Trustees’ meetings.
- Draft and distribute email updates for the Board of Trustees.
Executive Assistant to the Founders/Vice Presidents
- Plan and coordinate the Founders/Vice President’s travel.
- Complete administrative forms, assist and prepare the tracking and monitoring of expenses for the Founders.
- Draft, proofread, and edit a wide range of internal communications; draft correspondence; prepare and review reports, talking points, and presentations.
- Provide research support for the Vice President for Strategy and Leadership Development as needed.
- Research background information for meetings, reports, speeches, and executive correspondence.
Event Coordination
- Work with President/Founders to coordinate the planning and execution of employee retreats, External Retreats/Trainings, and Board of Trustee events.
- Assist with event logistics for Corporate Program events as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Candidate Requirements
- Minimum of five years experience at an executive support level in a professional environment.

Deputy Director for Government Affairs
Third Way is seeking a Deputy Director for Government Affairs to serve as the principal Third Way liaison to Congress. This position reports directly to the Vice President of Public Affairs.
Responsibilities include:
- Taking the lead in marketing Third Way products to Congress.
- Creating opportunities for the organization to participate in on-going congressional policy discussions.
- Identifying Congressional supporters for Third Way policy ideas.
- Maximizing the organization’s existing House and Senate relationships.
- Creating a system to expand and maintain the organization’s Senate and House allies.
- Managing the relationships with Third Way’s House and Senate co-chair offices.
- Other duties as assigned.

Deputy Director of Finance and Administration
Third Way is seeking a Deputy Director to provide administrative and programmatic support to the Director of Finance and Administration. This position will also support a broad range of internal and external communications for the Administrative Department.
The position has four major areas of responsibility:
Financial
- Share responsibility for financial systems oversight.
- Manage the routine accounting functions, including the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable and bank reconciliations.
- Accounts Payable data entry: enter vendor invoices into QuickBooks.
- Accounts Payable: print checks and prepare simple reports using QuickBooks.
- Prepare monthly Account Payables reports for review.
- Reconcile and verify invoices to ensure accurate and timely payment. Make sure correct accounting codes are assigned.
- Prepare journal entries and supporting documentation for approval.
- Ensure complete and up-to-date operating procedures for all accounting and financial controls.
Human Resources
- Work with Director to review and update employee handbook.
- Assist director with employee benefits, new employee orientation and employee hiring process.
Office Management
- Work with Administrative Assistant to ensure the facilities, computer services and general office management functions run efficiently and smoothly.
- Ensure staff is trained on the basic functions of the organization’s network and software applications to ensure efficiency and productivity.
- Maintain appropriate filing and documentation systems and databases for Administrative Department.
- Assist in the coordination, production and distribution of complex documents, including proposals and reports.
- Draft, edit, and proofread a variety of documents and enter data using Word, Excel, and other software and database programs.
- Interact with vendors. Negotiate discounts. Keep track of orders.
- Troubleshoot technology/software problems independently and with IT consulting firm.
Intern Program
- Work with Director to ensure internship program runs smoothly, all hiring and reviews are done in a timely fashion and follow up is done in compliance with internal guidelines
- Other general administrative duties to help keep the department running smoothly and efficiently.
Candidate Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree plus a minimum of five to seven years directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Excellent computer skills and MS Office Suite knowledge.
- Familiarity with QuickBooks required.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- High level of attention to detail and ability to work well under deadlines.
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Diplomatic at communicating with staff and external contacts.
- Flexible and adaptable to changing priorities.
- Ability to coordinate multiple projects within specified time frames.

Consultants
The Third Way Middle Class Project periodically hires part-time consultants to assist us with our policy research and analysis. We are looking for individuals with experience or expertise in the following topics, among others: aging and long-term care, retirement security, tax and budget policy, education and health care. Our consultants assist us with discrete projects in data collection, research and policy analysis. Assignments vary from short-term (weeks) to longer-term (months) and can be completed on a part-time basis.
