08/01/05Third Way Statement Applauding Frist's Stem Cell Research Position
Washington, DC – Third Way President Jonathan Cowan issued the following statement on the announcement last week by Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist that he would support stem cell research legislation.
“Third Way is delighted that Senator Frist has put principle above politics by supporting expanded federal funding for stem cell research. His decision to break with the President on this crucial issue is wise, bold and thoughtfully progressive, and we applaud him for it.
“We don’t always agree with the Majority Leader – we scolded him last week when he moved to cut-off debate on the defense authorization bill before amendments like the one increasing Army end-strength could be heard. But we must give credit where it is due, and Senator Frist deserves praise for his willingness to put science above partisanship on an issue of immense importance to the future of medicine.”
