Statement of Third Way’s Matt Bennett on No Labels’ False Claims
WASHINGTON – Third Way’s Matt Bennett issued the following statement:
“This morning, No Labels blasted out an email signed by three of their co-founders containing a bald-faced lie about me. They alleged that I, along with Rick Wilson of The Lincoln Project and others, was forming a new ‘dark money group…in an attempt to stop [them].’ This is categorically untrue.
“I understand why No Labels may be feeling the heat from Third Way. We have been leading the fight against their dangerous and deeply misguided plan to field a third-party presidential ticket in 2024. As we have documented in reports, in press statements, and in a recent op-ed, the No Labels bid has zero chance of actually electing a third-party candidate. But it could absolutely serve as a spoiler, tipping the race to Donald Trump. That’s why we believe the plan poses an existential threat to our democracy.
“We will not stop fighting this destructive idea until No Labels decides not to go forward with it. But we will continue to make the fight in public, not in the shadows. If No Labels is wondering about the name of the group behind the effort, it’s Third Way, not some made up nonsense they tell their donors.
“No Labels is well within their rights to debate the merits of their scheme. But they have no right to lie about me or my organization. We expect an immediate retraction will be forthcoming.”
