Third Way Applauds Introduction of The Equality Act
WASHINGTON — Third Way issued the following statement from Lanae Erickson, Senior Vice President for Social Policy & Politics:
“Right now in over half of the states in our country, a gay or transgender person can be fired simply because of who they are. From coast to coast, LGBT Americans can be denied loans, kicked out of public places, and turned away from housing because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Allowing these practices to continue sanctioned by federal law is un-American. The Equality Act of 2019 would give LGBT people protection under our basic civil rights laws. Because no one should fear losing their livelihood or home because of who they are or who they love.
“Americans from every faith tradition, political party, and background agree that we should treat others as we want to be treated—it is a core value we all share. This legislation would align our laws with that principal and ensure that every American is protected from discrimination and need not worry about those protections disappearing when they cross state lines. Congress should act swiftly to pass The Equality Act and update our laws to reflect our values.”
