Third Way condemns letter from House progressives urging a "peaceful settlement" with Russia

WASHINGTON — Third Way released the following statement from Valerie Shen, Vice President for National Security:

"Today’s excruciating letter from a group of House progressives urging President Biden to give Ukraine a “proactive diplomatic push” for a “peaceful settlement” with Russia only supports the sentiments of former President Trump, Kevin McCarthy, and Vladimir Putin himself. The very notion that Putin is capable of good faith negotiations is belied by all to which the world has borne witness: the massacre of innocent Ukrainians and egregious violations of the global order with his illegal war.

"The letter is incoherent, citing the widespread bloodshed and suffering of the Ukrainians, only to completely dishonor their courageous sacrifice by suggesting they give up everything they’ve been fighting for. The Ukrainian people have been on the front lines of defending global democracies against dictators and war criminals, and the United States and all other free countries can ill afford to waver in their support. Although Trump and extremists have been growing a pro-Putin wing in the Republican Party, there is no room for any in the Democratic Party to give aid and comfort to the likes of Vladimir Putin."
