Third Way Statement in Support of H.R.1 “For the People Act of 2019”

WASHINGTON—Third Way released the following statement from Lanae Erickson, Senior Vice President for the Social Policy and Politics Program:

"We believe this legislation will go a long way towards restoring the American people’s faith in our democratic institutions. The proposals it includes would fix cracks in our current system and update our elections for the needs of the 21^st century.

"We are especially pleased that this legislation includes some of our top priorities for campaign finance and electoral reform, such as ensuring transparency around who is funding political advertising, offering a way to fund elections through small dollar donations, reigning in super PACs, advancing automatic, same-day, and online voter registration, mandating two weeks of transit-accessible early voting, expanding access to absentee mail ballots, banning partisan congressional gerrymandering, and ending disenfranchisement for returning citizens who have completed their sentence. Taken together, we believe this legislation would be a significant step toward returning our democracy to the people."
