Third Way Voices Support for the Prohibiting Russian Uranium Imports Act

WASHINGTON—Today, Third Way released the following statement from Senior Vice President Josh Freed on the House passage of the Prohibiting Russian Uranium Imports Act (H.R. 1042). The legislation, introduced by House Energy and Commerce Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (WA-5) and Representative Bob Latta (OH-05), bans the import of Russian uranium fuel by 2028.

“Russia controls one third of the world’s low-enriched uranium supply and is the only country producing high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) for commercial use that advanced nuclear reactors need. Relying on Vladmir Putin’s authoritarian regime for nuclear fuel threatens our national security and our allies’ security, particularly in Europe.

The United States must take swift action to establish a domestic uranium supply and end our dependence on Russia. It is imperative that we lead in investing in domestic and allied countries’ nuclear fuel supply chains and stand up to Putin with firm action on Russian uranium imports. This legislation is part of a coordinated effort with key investments that will help end Russian influence in the global nuclear fuel market.

We support this bipartisan effort and strongly urge Congress to pass the necessary funding and authority for federal nuclear fuel programs to ensure that this policy is part of an effective and comprehensive nuclear fuel strategy.”
