Communications Advisor, Communications

As part of the Communications Team, the Communications Advisor oversees and executes Third Way’s email marketing strategy. This position supports the entire organization by ensuring that timely, compelling information and ideas reach the right audience to advance our policy and political goals. We aim to expand Third Way’s reach online and build connections with leaders in key policy communities to impact political conversations and advance our policy ideas. This dynamic team is nimble and creative. You will be encouraged to bring your passions and energy to developing interesting, persuasive, and timely email sends in a highly collaborative setting. Have an idea for a new approach? We love people who can identify a new way to achieve our campaign objectives and then design and execute a plan to make it happen. This is a high-impact role ideally suited for someone politically savvy, interested in digital trends, a sense of humor, and excellent judgment.  This position will report to the Deputy Director of Communications.

As the Communications Advisor, a typical day might include…

  • Participating in the daily Communications Team meeting
  • Drafting a short and compelling email to share a new op-ed with a top-tier political audience
  • Meeting with a policy team to determine the appropriate audience for a new policy report and setting up that mailing list
  • Maintaining our schedule of emails and report releases—proactively suggesting solutions when conflicting plans arise
  • Researching, drafting, and editing our communications-focused, monthly newsletter for a Hill and industry audience
  • Monitoring news coverage and online conversations related to our policy campaigns—flagging opportunities to capitalize on an important moment to the team.
  • Developing monthly analytics reports with key insights to help inform and influence Third Way’s digital strategy.

Salary Range: $65,000 - $80,000, annually

  • Have a degree in Communications, Marketing, or related field or highly relevant professional experience.
  • Have 2-5 years of experience in email marketing, preferably working within the politics and policy space.
  • Are familiar with Salesforce, HubSpot, or a similar email marketing tool.
  • Can think strategically about new opportunities to use email to develop relationships and engage core audiences.
  • Pay very close attention to details and take pride in your work.
  • Think on your feet and able communicate clearly and effectively in writing and verbally.
  • Are constantly looking for cutting edge and impactful digital communications tactics.
  • Have a keen understanding of how to use data to drive insights about how our audience is interacting with our ideas and communications.
  • Are politically engaged and keep up with the day-to-day news cycle.

  • Familiarize yourself with Third Way’s email marketing platform and internal approval process.
  • Participate in messaging conversations and briefings with your supervisor about Third Way’s priorities, ongoing campaigns, and our work in the political and policy space.
  • Join the communications team in developing creative email marketing ideas and products to support our top campaigns.
  • Participate in Third Way’s comprehensive onboarding program. You’ll learn about all aspects of Business Operations, which includes benefits, IT, finance, and office operations.
  • Meet your Third Way Buddy, be introduced to the entire staff, and start to learn the TW’s culture.
  • Attend your departmental daily meetings. You’ll learn about the key goals of your program, how they’re doing, what challenges they face, and how you will contribute.

Within 2 months, you'll...

  • Prepare Third Way’s email sends and manage contact lists.
  • Maintain and coordinate the day-to-day calendar of email sends and report releases.
  • Prepare regular analytics reports and provide key insights to policy teams.
  • Bring new ideas and suggestions to your weekly one-on-ones with your manager.
  • Gain an understanding each employee’s role and their contribution to the organization.
  • Attend program overview sessions to learn more about each team’s contribution to TW’s mission.
  • Participate in at least one internal Professional Development trainings or a Center for Fun activity.
  • Learn and experience TW’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and respect in the workplace.

Within 3 months, you'll...

  • Feel a sense of comfort and familiarity with the staff, your team, and your work.
  • Take over primary management of Third Way’s email marketing platform.
  • Draft and manage Third Way’s LoopedIn Newsletter.
  • Lead the weekly Communications content calendar meetings.
  • Partner with other members of the communications team and our policy and political analysts to prepare content to elevate important findings and data.
  • Continue to attend weekly departmental meetings with a stronger understanding of your team’s strategic goals.
  • Attend and participate in external functions with other members of your team.
  • Complete your 90 day self-evaluation and performance review with your manager.
  • Partner with your manager to establish your long-term goals for the remainder of the year.
